Introduction to Ultrasound Scans

An ultrasound scan is a safe and non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the baby inside the womb. It is one of the most commonly used methods to monitor pregnancy and check the baby’s growth and wellbeing.

During an ultrasound scan, a trained sonographer uses a small handheld device called a probe or transducer. This device sends sound waves into the body and receives echoes that are converted into images displayed on a screen.

Ultrasound scans are commonly used to:

  • Confirm pregnancy in the early weeks
  • Detect the baby’s heartbeat
  • Estimate gestational age and due date
  • Monitor the baby’s development and growth
  • Identify multiple pregnancies such as twins
  • Provide reassurance for expectant parents

Many parents visit an ultrasound clinic early in pregnancy for reassurance. An ultrasound scan 6 weeks pregnant can often confirm the pregnancy and check the heartbeat, while an ultrasound scan 7 weeks may provide a clearer image of the baby and its development.

What Happens During An Ultrasound Scan

Visiting our ultrasound clinic is simple and comfortable. When you arrive for your appointment, the sonographer will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to your abdomen. This gel helps the ultrasound probe move smoothly across the skin and improves the clarity of the images.

The sonographer then gently moves the probe across your abdomen. The sound waves sent by the probe create images of the baby that appear on the monitor. You will be able to see the baby’s position, movements, and heartbeat during the ultrasound scan.

Most ultrasound appointments take around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the type of scan and the baby’s position. During this time, the sonographer will guide you through the images and explain what you are seeing.

Are Ultrasound Scans Safe in Pregnancy?

Yes, ultrasound scans are widely considered safe during pregnancy when performed by trained professionals.

  • Unlike X-rays, an ultrasound scan does not use radiation. Instead, it uses sound waves to produce images of the baby in the womb. Because of this, ultrasound technology has been used safely in pregnancy care for many decades.
  • Healthcare professionals around the world rely on ultrasound scans to monitor pregnancy and assess the baby’s growth and development.
  • When carried out by experienced sonographers in a professional ultrasound clinic, these scans are considered a safe and reliable way to observe the baby and provide reassurance to parents.
