Trusted Ultrasound Scan Clinic in Rotherham

How Ultrasound Imaging Works

Ultrasound imaging is a simple and widely used method that allows healthcare professionals to look inside the body without using radiation. In maternity care, ultrasound scans help monitor early development in the womb and provide reassurance during different stages.

The scan is carried out using a handheld device known as a transducer. This probe is gently moved across the abdomen while it sends sound waves into the body. These waves bounce back from internal structures and are instantly converted into images by the ultrasound machine.

The result is a live picture that the sonographer can view on a monitor during the appointment.

Many people choose an ultrasound scan in Rotherham to check that everything is progressing normally and to see the early stages of development.

Ultrasound scans are commonly used to:

  • Confirm that development is taking place inside the womb
  • Detect the baby’s heartbeat
  • Estimate gestational age and calculate an expected due date
  • Observe movement and position
  • Identify multiple pregnancies such as twins
  • Determine gender at the appropriate stage
  • Provide reassurance in early pregnancy

Some individuals choose to arrange an ultrasound scan at 6 weeks pregnant or 7 weeks pregnant to confirm the pregnancy and look for the first visible signs of a heartbeat.

Ultrasound technology has been used in maternity care for many years and continues to be a trusted way to monitor progress throughout pregnancy.

What Happens During the Scan

When you arrive for a private ultrasound scan, the sonographer will first explain how the procedure works and answer any questions you may have.

A small amount of water-based gel is then applied to the abdomen. This gel helps the probe glide smoothly over the skin and improves the clarity of the ultrasound images.

The sonographer gently moves the probe across the stomach while the ultrasound machine displays real-time images on the screen.

Depending on the stage of pregnancy, it may be possible to see the baby’s position, movement and heartbeat during the scan.

Throughout the appointment, the sonographer will talk through what can be seen on the monitor and help you understand the images.

Most ultrasound baby scan appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes, although the exact length may vary slightly depending on the type of scan and the baby's position.

Is Ultrasound Technology Safe For Pregnancy?

Ultrasound scanning is widely regarded as a safe imaging technique.

Unlike some medical imaging methods that use radiation, ultrasound relies entirely on sound waves to produce images. Because of this, it is commonly used throughout pregnancy to observe development and confirm important milestones.

For many years, healthcare professionals have used ultrasound technology as a safe and reliable way to monitor progress inside the womb.

When performed by trained professionals using modern equipment, a private ultrasound scan in Rotherham provides a dependable way to check development and gain reassurance during pregnancy.
